The Bendigo Wave

Over several nights in 1983 hundreds of people across three Victorian towns reported colour-changing conical lights high in the south-eastern sky. The RAAF is described as confirming photographs were genuine while being unable to explain them. This is the record of what was reported across the region, not a verdict on what hung over central Victoria.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Bendigo Wave is a reported UAP case in Australia, 1983.
  • Constable Ray Addison said he and his family stopped their car in Victoria in 1983 and watched a metallic craft with six bright lights hum slowly overhead at about 200 metres for around thirty seconds.
  • Hundreds of people across Bendigo, Maryborough and Ballarat in central Victoria reported colour-changing conical lights hovering high in the south-eastern sky over several nights in 1983.
  • The RAAF is described as confirming that photographs of the 1983 Bendigo lights were genuine while being unable to explain them.
  • The Addison family's account says the craft they saw over Victoria in 1983 matched one described by Victorian police.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 5 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

A metallic craft with six bright lights hummed slowly over a stopped car at about 200 metres, according to Constable Ray Addison. He was with his wife Jeannie and their two daughters. It stayed in view for around thirty seconds and then disappeared. The telling says it matched the craft described by Victorian police.

Around them a wider wave was running. Reports came from Bendigo, Maryborough and Ballarat, three towns spread across central Victoria, over several consecutive nights in 1983. What people described was consistent: conical lights high in the south-eastern sky, changing colour, hovering rather than passing.

What is on the record

Two tellings in one video on one channel, five named claimants and no documents. John Davis, Mike Evans and Paul Mulqueen carry the account of the wave. Ray and Jeannie Addison carry the close sighting. The grade is testimony.

The scale is what distinguishes this file. Hundreds of reports across three towns and several nights is a different proposition from one witness on one road, and it is the sort of event that should have left a substantial documentary trail in Australian records. None of it is in our archive, which is a gap in our holdings rather than in the event.

The record states that the RAAF confirmed photographs as genuine while being unable to explain them. Authentic in the sense of not manipulated is a much weaker statement than identified, and retellings often run the two together. No RAAF assessment is in our holdings to check.

A high, slow, colour-changing light in the south-eastern sky over several nights has an obvious mundane candidate in a bright star or planet near the horizon, seen through atmospheric scintillation. The record does not engage with that, and the archive notes it as live rather than settled. It fits the Addison sighting less well. A humming craft at 200 metres is a different description from a distant light, though it rests on one family's account.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on five named claimants describing one connected episode, through a single channel. The claimant count sits far below the hundreds the account describes, which is the ordinary gap between a reported crowd and a resolvable witness list. What hung over central Victoria is not resolved here.
