The Delphos Landing Ring

On the evening of 2 November 1971, a teenage boy on a farm near Delphos, Kansas reported a glowing object hovering low over the ground, and afterwards a ring of altered soil was found where it had stood. The soil is what the case turns on. This is the record of what was reported and tested, not a verdict on what was over the farm.

On the evening of 2 November 1971 a teenage boy, fifteen or sixteen at the time, was doing chores on his family's farm near Delphos. He reported a brilliantly glowing object hovering a foot or two off the ground. It was mushroom-shaped and perhaps ten feet across. He described being briefly blinded and unable to move. His dog, he said, was affected the same way. The object rose and left. Where it had been the family found a ring of glowing soil.

What is on the record

The archive counts three claimants, all of one family and from a single reporting channel: the boy and his parents. Their account describes the boy's temporary blindness and paralysis. It describes a mother who touched the ring and found her fingers went numb. And it describes soil altered to a depth reported as fourteen inches: dry, water-repellent and too mineral-rich to grow plants. The account credits the investigator Ted Phillips with examining the site and running laboratory tests that it says confirmed the anomaly.

The material the archive holds is testimony and journalism rather than government paperwork. Four reporting pieces cover the case and all come from one outlet. The soil is the physical thread. But the archive holds the claims about it rather than the samples, and no independent laboratory record sits in the file here.

Why it sits where it does

Delphos grades L3, the archive's tier for independent witnesses describing one connected event. Three people describe the same night and the same ring. Later reporting has kept the case in circulation. No primary document and no authenticated sensor data carry it higher. What altered the soil, if it was altered as described, is not resolved here.
