The Fiery Objects Seen Across Devon at 11 p.m.

At about 11 p.m. on Monday 30 October 1950 people from Woolacombe to Paignton, 60 miles apart, saw brilliant silvery-blue objects with fiery trails race south in silence, and at Woolacombe two seemed to collide and disintegrate. The account survives as a Sunday Dispatch article kept in the FBI's flying-disc file, with no evaluation. This is the record of what the people of Devon reported, not a verdict on what crossed the county.

At about 11 p.m. on Monday 30 October 1950 people across Devon saw something race across the sky. At Woolacombe J. Stewart saw two brilliant objects in line astern. The rear one seemed to catch up with the front one and collide with it, and they "disintegrated". Near Exeter A. Franklin saw them. So did a woman in Cullompton, Mr and Mrs L. Mussell at Lympstone and A. J. Powell at Sidmouth Junction. At Torquay the fisherman Frederick Bray, D. Beame and H. Warren reported them, and at Paignton Arthur N. Jeffery and Harry Cove-Clark. The crew of a Royal Navy liberty boat running between Flagstaff Steps at Devonport Dockyard and HMS Defiance saw them too. The descriptions agree on brilliant silvery-blue or bluish-white objects with a fiery trail, silent and travelling south at "terrific speed". At Paignton a ball of light was followed by a broken stream of lights "like a feeble rocket".

What is on the record

The account is a Sunday Dispatch article of 5 November 1950, "What did the people of Devon see last week?". The FBI kept it in its flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894, which the Department of War has released. The article dates the sightings to the Monday of the previous week, which is 30 October. Hatch and Johnson agree. Johnson's "two men named Cove and Clark" is one man, Harry Cove-Clark. No evaluation sits with the cutting.

Silent objects travelling south and seen at the same moment from places 60 miles apart, with one breaking up, fit a fireball. No agency said so on file.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The witnesses are named in a newspaper the FBI kept, and the paper presents their accounts as independent of one another. The archive has nothing beyond that article. Sourcing sets the tier, not the truth of what was seen. What crossed Devon that night is not resolved here.
