The Belén School Sighting

In the summer of 1954 a physics teacher and his students at the Colegio de Belén in Havana were tracking a weather balloon when they reported a whitish pearl-shaped object arriving at speed, stopping dead, turning and departing. About five people saw it. This is the record of a short daylight observation made by witnesses who already had something in the sky to compare it with.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Belén School Sighting is a reported UAP case near Belen school, summer 1954, 3 pm.
  • A physics teacher and his students at the Colegio de Belén were tracking a weather balloon when a whitish pearl-shaped object arrived at great speed, stopped abruptly in a manner described as defying inertia, then left as abruptly.
  • The balloon gave the witnesses a known object in the sky as a reference for size, distance and speed while the second object was in view.
  • The archive's telling casts Pérez Gutiérrez as a pupil; the documented account has him as the school's physics teacher.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 3 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The witnesses were at the Colegio de Belén in Marianao, Havana, in the summer of 1954, and they were already looking up. According to the account the archive holds, they were watching a weather balloon when a solid object arrived at great speed. It was whitish and pearl-shaped. It stopped abruptly, in a manner the account describes as defying inertia, then turned and departed as abruptly as it had come. About five people saw it.

What is on the record

Three claimants are resolved: Enrique Pérez Gutiérrez, his classmates as a group, and his uncle. One correction to the archive's telling belongs here. It casts Pérez Gutiérrez as a pupil; the documented account has him as the school's physics teacher, with the students launching the balloon under him. The account's own figure of roughly five witnesses and the archive's resolved count of three remain different measures and should not be run together.

The circumstance is what makes this brief account worth a file. The witnesses were tracking a weather balloon at the time, which means they had a known object in the sky as a reference for size, distance and speed while the second object was in view. Very few sightings come with a control already in the frame. The comparison also removes the most common explanation, since the balloon they were watching was not the thing that arrived at speed and stopped.

Against that, the record is short. There is one telling through one channel, no photograph, and no official report in our holdings. The description of motion is the whole of the anomaly, and descriptions of motion are estimates made by eye.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. A teacher and his class describing the same daylight object carry it there. Nothing was recorded at the time. What crossed the sky above the school is not resolved here.
