The Beams over Fontiès-d'Aude

One night in late May 1995 a couple at Fontiès-d'Aude watched a large dark object hang silently over their house and sweep the ground with beams of light. Afterwards their dogs fell ill, they felt unwell and plants withered where the beams had fallen. France's official investigators explained the illnesses and the plants but not the object. This is the record of what was reported and tested, not a verdict on what hovered over the house.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Beams over Fontiès-d'Aude is a reported UAP case in Fontiès-d'Aude, Aude, France, May 1995.
  • A couple reported a large, silent dark object hanging over their house at night and sweeping the ground with beams of light, while their dogs hid indoors.
  • Afterwards, they said, the dogs fell sick, both of them felt unwell and plants withered where the beams had fallen.
  • GEIPAN found no link between the object and any of these effects, putting them down to medical treatment, the heat and plant decline seen elsewhere too.
  • The object itself, GEIPAN says, remains unexplained.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 corroborating primary document.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At about half past three one morning between 25 and 28 May 1995, a couple at Fontiès-d'Aude, near Carcassonne, saw a big dark object above their house. It put them in mind of a helicopter. It hung there without a sound, with no smoke and no trail. After a few minutes it had swept the ground five or six times with beams of light, and then it left at moderate speed. Their dogs slunk into the house without barking.

About a week later the dogs began vomiting and had diarrhoea. The wife had health problems and her husband felt exhausted. He noticed the vegetation dying back where the beams had lit it, and a neighbour was suddenly taken into hospital. Frightened, he called the Sécurité Civile to ask whether the object could be to blame.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerial phenomena. It holds this case as FONTIES-D'AUDE (11) 2-.05.1995 and classes it D. Class D means GEIPAN investigated and could not explain the phenomenon. The blank in the date is GEIPAN's own. It places the night somewhere between 25 and 28 May.

The investigation dismantled the aftermath. It found no link at all between the object and the effects. GEIPAN puts the couple's health down to the treatment the wife was receiving and to the heat. The neighbour's admission to hospital, it says, is not surprising given his age. Many plants outside the area the beams were said to have touched showed the same kind of decline.

What survives is the sighting. In GEIPAN's words, "le phénomène observé n'en reste pas moins inexpliqué" (the phenomenon observed remains no less unexplained). Its page names no hypothesis for the object itself and lists no documents.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. GEIPAN withholds the identities of its witnesses, so the released record carries no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing, not the quality of an investigation that took the physical claims apart one by one. What hung over the house is not resolved here.
