Six Pieces over Highland Park (1952)

On the evening of 2 July 1952 a Los Angeles police officer watched an extremely bright object for several minutes and plotted it with a protractor before it broke into six or eight pieces that fell fast towards the ground. The report survives as one relayed entry in an Air Force file whose compiler called such reports unconfirmed and incomplete. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

The witness measured it. At 19:45 Pacific time on 2 July 1952, according to the relayed report, "an extremely bright object was observed for period of several minutes". The observer "plotted object with a protractor" and put it 34 to 38 degrees above the horizon on a bearing of 175 degrees, almost due south. Then the "object broke up into 6 or 8 pieces which appeared to descend toward the ground at a high rate of speed." The witness is named as Mr. Sublette, a member of the Los Angeles Police Department who lived in Highland Park.

What is on the record

The report fills one item on page 155 of DOW-UAP-D102, the Project Blue Book file on the Tremonton film, released by the Department of War on 18 September 2026. The page is the last sheet of a typed list of CIRVIS reports, the military's channel for urgent sightings, relayed through flight service centres. Item 24 cites CIRVIS report 030442Z July, submitted by March Flight Service Center. The rest of the list and the name of the office that compiled it are not in the file. The weather is "unknown" and "Air traffic information not given". The record does not say where Sublette stood, only where he lived.

The compiler's closing comment covers every item on the page: "The sighting reports listed above are unconfirmed, incomplete, and, in some cases, erroneously submitted." They were passed on "for information purposes" to keep the flow of reports unbroken. The page shares only a date with the Tremonton film, and the file does not say why it was kept there. No explanation is offered for the object. No newspaper or other account of it was found outside the file.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The witness is a named police officer, but his report reaches the archive second-hand as one relayed entry. No independent testimony sits beside it. A tier measures sourcing, not truth. What broke apart in the southern sky is not resolved here.
