Three Objects over Kautokeino

At ten past noon on 13 May 1954 the sheriff of Kautokeino, three of his deputies and two clerks watched three objects in V-formation through binoculars for four to five minutes, shiny on top, reddish brown beneath and turning as they flew. Norway's Air Command North said they were not conventional aircraft or weather balloons. This is the record of what Scandinavian newspapers reported and the CIA collected, not a verdict on what crossed the Finnmark sky.

Six people from Kautokeino's sheriff's office watched the three objects through binoculars for four or five minutes. It was 12.10 on 13 May 1954 and the weather was clear, with perfect visibility. Sheriff Oskal said the objects flew in formation at about 2,000 metres. They were reddish brown on the underside and shiny on the upper, and they moved with a rotary motion. They left no smoke. A report from Hammerfest described three bright objects passing over Kautokeino at great speed in V-formation and vanishing to the south-west. A deputy constable who watched them said they flew too high for him to make out a shape, but that they were not ordinary aeroplanes. To him they looked red on one side and white on the other, and they seemed to be rotating.

What is on the record

The archive holds CIA report 00-W-30797, a digest of newspaper items on unidentified flying objects from January to May 1954, distributed on 30 July 1954 and marked "unevaluated information". It holds two scans of the same report. The Kautokeino material comes from two newspapers. Dagens Nyheter of Stockholm printed the Hammerfest report on 14 May. Berlingske Tidende of Copenhagen carried an Oslo story on 15 May saying Luftkommando Nord, the Air Command North, had received "a number of reports" indicating the objects "were not conventional aircraft or meteorological balloons". These are Scandinavian press reports the CIA collected and translated, not a CIA investigation.

The two items differ in detail. Oskal is quoted calling the objects "triangular in shape", which the CIA translator suspected was a garbled reference to the V-formation. The deputy saw no shape at all. The same Dagens Nyheter item reports a "brilliant, silver-colored sphere with a tail" seen that morning in Sweden's Norrbotten. The record does not say whether the sightings are connected. No Norwegian military file or local press account has been found, and the sheriff's first name is not given.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. Two copies of one CIA press digest carry it, and they count as one source. The two newspapers it quotes reach the archive only through that digest. It names one witness, Sheriff Oskal. No independent testimony sits beside it in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, never truth. What flew over Kautokeino that noon is not resolved here.
