The La Joya Air Base Interception

On 11 April 1980, a Peruvian Air Force pilot said he was scrambled from La Joya Air Base near Arequipa to shoot down a balloon-like object in restricted airspace, fired his cannon at it without effect, and chased it as it climbed away. This is the record of what the pilot described, not a verdict on what held over the base.

The pilot, Oscar Santa María Huertas, placed the event on 11 April 1980 at La Joya Air Base in the Arequipa region of Peru. By his account a stationary, balloon-like luminous object sat in restricted airspace over the base, and he was ordered up in a Sukhoi-22 to bring it down. He said he fired 64 rounds of 30mm cannon that appeared to strike fully but were absorbed with no effect. The object, he says, evaded him with sudden vertical climbs and rose to around 63,000 feet. One telling clocks it at up to Mach 1.6; another sizes the domed craft at about thirty feet. At close range it resolved into a cream-coloured dome with no visible propulsion. Low on fuel, he glided back; the object reportedly stayed visible for about two hours.

What is on the record

The archive resolves two claimants from a single reporting channel: the pilot himself and the base personnel as a body. The accounts say roughly 1,800 men in formation saw the object; that figure is the account's claim, and the archive counts those men as one group entry.

One telling states the incident was documented in a US Department of Defense memo. No such document is present in this file. The archive holds no primary paperwork and no authenticated footage for the case, so the DoD memo is a claim within the testimony rather than corroboration the archive can show. The pilot is also reported to have kept the encounter to himself for some twenty-two years.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L3, resting on testimony of a connected event with more than one claimant, but it is thin in its sourcing: a single channel carries it and no document backs it. Its interest is in the detail of cannon fire that reportedly had no effect. What Santa María Huertas engaged over La Joya is not resolved here.
