On the night of 13 August 1956, radar operators at RAF Lakenheath and nearby stations tracked objects that ground crews and aircrew also reported seeing. The Condon Report, which set out to deflate most UFO cases, left this one unexplained. This is the record of what was tracked and reported, not a verdict on what was over Suffolk.
RAF Lakenheath sits in the flat farmland of Suffolk and was, in 1956, an American-operated base in a country still rebuilding from the war. On the night of 13 August, radar stations in the area tracked returns moving in ways the operators could not reconcile with known aircraft, and ground observers and aircrew reported lights in the sky over the same period. A fighter was scrambled. The episode ran for hours across more than one radar set and more than one pair of eyes, which is what separates it from the ordinary run of reports.
What is on the record
The archive grades this case on documents rather than testimony. Its corroboration includes the Condon Report's own treatment of the incident and a run of files from the UK National Archives DEFE series, the Ministry of Defence's own paperwork on UFO reports. The Condon Report is the significant one. Commissioned to examine the phenomenon and widely read as a dismissal of it, the study nonetheless left Lakenheath among the cases it could not account for, and the astronomer J. Allen Hynek later cited it as a genuine unexplained radar case.
A caveat belongs here. The archive's record for this canonical also carries material from later incidents at RAF bases in the same part of England, and the claimant names attached to it are drawn from that wider discussion rather than from the 1956 night alone. The documents are the reliable part of this entry; the witness list is not clean.
Why it sits where it does
Lakenheath grades L4, the archive's document-corroborated tier, because government records rather than retellings carry it. It records a night on which instruments and observers reported the same thing and an official study declined to explain it. What was tracked is not resolved here.
