The Langenargen Incident

On the night of 23 to 24 February 1977, two men leaving a bar near Langenargen on Lake Constance reported bright objects casting searchlight beams; one of them also reported a close encounter with small beings. An hour of the night was unaccounted for. This is the record of what was reported and investigated, not a verdict on what was over the lake.

Two men left the Bierkeller Waldeck at Langenargen on the night of 23 February 1977 and saw two intensely bright objects hanging over the ground, each throwing out four beams like searchlights. The objects are described as merging, separating and vanishing, then doing it again. Rudi Grutsch found he could not move. Lothar Schaeffler reported coming face to face with two small beings, panicking and breaking a window in his effort to get away, and being lifted off the ground. An hour of the night was missing when the two men accounted for it afterwards.

What is on the record

The archive resolves five claimants here from a single video on a single channel. The account itself claims six independent witnesses to the lights, including Mrs Brielmaier, Carl Brueger and a Mr Burkhardt, and it is worth keeping the two figures apart: six is what the source says, five is what the archive resolves. The corroboration those witnesses offer is of the lights over the area. The close encounter and the levitation rest on Schaeffler alone.

The telling continues past that night. Schaeffler is described as suffering lasting psychological and physical effects, as having nightmares and as being visited by warning figures in the manner of men in black who then vanished. Part of the recall came through hypnotic regression, and the file records that route rather than hiding it. The account also states that MUFON CES worked the case over close to two decades, which would make it one of the longer investigations in the archive. None of that investigation is present as a document. The entry holds no paperwork of any kind, so the length and the findings of the enquiry are the source's claim.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L3, the archive's independent-testimony tier, on the number of separate people said to have seen the lights. The independence here is among witnesses rather than among sources, since a single channel carries the whole entry, and no records or instrument data support it. What the two men met outside the bar is not resolved here.
