The McRoberts Photograph

On 8 October 1981 a woman photographing a mountain on Vancouver Island captured a sharply focused domed disc she had not seen at the time. The photograph has been tested against a thrown-object explanation. This is the record of the image and what has been argued about it, not a verdict on what is in the frame.

Hannah McRoberts was photographing a mountain near Campbell River on Vancouver Island. By her account she saw nothing unusual at the time and thought she was taking a picture of a cloud. The object appeared when the film was developed. That sequence is the whole reason the image is taken seriously by anyone: it removes the photographer's intention from the moment of exposure.

What is on the record

Two tellings across two independent channels, two claimant entries both referring to McRoberts, and no documents. The grade is testimony, and the archive does not hold the negative.

The substantive telling is an analysis rather than a story. The obvious explanation for a disc that nobody saw is something small and close to the lens, and the frisbee hypothesis is the one that has been tested. The argument recorded here turns on brightness: the object's chrome-like reflection is measured as exceeding the cloud behind it by roughly 1.5 log units, which is offered as difficult to reconcile with a small matte object thrown into frame. On that basis the presenter concludes the frisbee explanation is unlikely.

The archive records that as a reported analysis, not as its own finding. The measurement cannot be checked from our holdings, and photographic cases of this era are notoriously sensitive to the quality of the copy being examined.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on independent tellings. A single unwitnessed photograph cannot reach the document-corroborated tier however good it looks. What sits above that mountain in the frame is not resolved here.
