The Night of the Overflights

On the night of 24 January 1985 people around Wewak in Papua New Guinea reported fast, lit objects with contrails and noise, and an Air Niugini pilot said his radar showed aircraft flying south to north at high altitude and high speed. Frightened residents prompted a public meeting that the Prime Minister attended. The American embassy knew of no US aircraft in the country's airspace. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what crossed the sky.

Something crossed the skies of Papua New Guinea on the evening of 24 January 1985, and it frightened people. The National Intelligence Organization heard from its officer in Wewak that residents had been scared by overflights. The provincial premier called a public meeting on the subject, and the Prime Minister, spending the weekend in his electoral district, attended it. There were reports of "fast-moving objects with lights, contrails, and noise". An Air Niugini pilot who had just taken off from Wewak for Port Moresby said his radar picked up aircraft flying south to north at high altitude and high speed as he passed over Angoram.

What is on the record

The source is a single State Department cable, 85 PORT MORESBY 199. The US Embassy sent it on 28 January 1985 to the US commander in the Pacific in Honolulu, and the Department of War released it on 8 May 2026 as DOS-UAP-D1. The intelligence office had made an informal inquiry. Of all the reports it placed "some credence" in the pilot's. People at various points around the country also reported contrails. One aircraft was seen heading north to south at 7 p.m. local time and six to eight heading south to north at 10 p.m.

The embassy checked its records and spoke to 43 SW at Andersen Air Force Base on Guam. It then told the intelligence office it knew of "no B-52 overflights and no U.S. aircraft in PNG airspace on January 24". It called the information "very sketchy" and noted that sources were unsure which way the aircraft had flown. The cable asks Honolulu to confirm and to shed "any light" it could. No reply is in the release. The pilot and the residents are unnamed, and no local press account has been found. The cable treats the question as one of unexplained military overflights and offers no other explanation.

Why it sits where it does

The archive grades this L0, a single account. One cable carries it and names nobody who saw anything. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What flew over Wewak and Angoram that night is not resolved here.
