The Portland Sighting

On 4 July 1947 hundreds of people in Portland, Oregon, among them numerous law enforcement officers, reported formations of wingless objects moving at high speed. The testimony held here is a single short account, and the one document attached to it is a period case-file reference rather than corroboration proper to the day. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the city.

The report is plain and it is short. On 4 July 1947, in daylight over Portland, hundreds of people described formations of objects without wings moving at high speed. Among them were numerous law enforcement officers. That is the substance of what the archive holds by way of description, and it is worth saying at the outset that the telling names no individual witness.

What is on the record

The testimony side is thin. One telling on one channel, and eight claimants: six named people, among them Patrolman H. B. Haney, Robert D. Adair and Mrs Raymond Dupuis, and two categories, hundreds of persons and law enforcement officers. Nothing in the account gives a direction, a duration or a count of objects.

One document is filed alongside it, a Project Blue Book case reference for Portland, Oregon, held via the National Archives and archive.org. It is classed as reporting rather than as a primary record. An earlier version of this entry also attached a run of period survey documents on the wider 1947 sighting wave, general files and analyses covering the whole country rather than this city, and the archive no longer treats that survey material as corroboration for this specific afternoon.

Why it sits where it does

Portland grades L3, independent witnesses describing one connected event, on the strength of its eight claimants rather than on any document. The description is thin, the telling names no one, and no paperwork in the file speaks to this particular afternoon rather than to the 1947 wave in general. What flew over the city that afternoon is not resolved here.
