Six Airmen and the Blue-white Circle over San Marcos AFB

Around 22:40 on 21 July 1952 six men at and near San Marcos Air Force Base, Texas, reported lights in the sky, and the base's report pieced their statements into a single silent circle of blue-white light. The statements themselves do not agree on what each man saw. Blue Book carries it as case 1516, Unidentified. This is the record of what the six reported, not a verdict on what was over San Marcos.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Six Airmen and the Blue-white Circle over San Marcos AFB is a reported UAP case in San Marcos Air Force Base, San Marcos, Texas, USA, 21 July 1952, about 22:40 CST.
  • Six servicemen at and near San Marcos Air Force Base, Texas, reported lights on 21 July 1952 that the base report described as a silent, perfectly circular blue-white object.
  • The base officer of the day said it climbed and levelled off "like an aircraft under good control", while other witnesses described a falling blue-green light and a slow object passing over the base about four times.
  • The base report noted the statements conflicted but said no meteorological or other activity could account for the sightings.
  • Blue Book placed the case, number 1516, on its official Unidentified list.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 6 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

First Lieutenant Wayne D. Scott was the base officer of the day, driving on San Marcos Air Force Base at about 22:40 on 21 July 1952. He saw a light climb steeply and level off "like an aircraft under good control". Staff Sergeant Samuel R. Locke was off the base on the road from Lockhart, near Maxwell, Texas. He saw a red flash and a descending blue flame like a flare, then a round white-to-yellow object moving off south. Air policemen on the base saw a blue-green light rise and fall, or drop like a shooting star. At about 22:45 the fence guard on his rounds, Airman Third Class Paul M. Nelson Jr., watched a slow reddish-yellow object pass over the base about four times.

What is on the record

Blue Book case 1516 holds the base's Air Intelligence Information Report and the witness statements. The report's summary describes one perfectly circular object giving off brilliant blue-white light with a trailing blue light. It made no sound and was seen for about sixty seconds, at speeds reported anywhere from a hover to near-sonic. It vanished "as though the flame or light were extinguished". The other named observers are Staff Sergeant Thedford R. Townsend and two Air Police airmen, David McKenzie and Frank R. Norred.

The report is candid about its own material. It notes that the observers were not rated and that their statements conflicted. It also says that no meteorological or other activity could account for what they saw. Read one by one, the statements describe different-looking things: a meteor-like blue-green fall in one and a slow repeated pass in another. The single circle is the base's synthesis. Blue Book placed the case on its official Unidentified list. NICAP, the Berliner list of Blue Book Unknowns, the Hatch database and the Overmeire catalogue all carry it.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD: a released government record names who saw it. All six identified witnesses are servicemen named in the Air Force's own report, and their statements are the only account the archive holds. A high tier speaks to the paperwork and says nothing of what was in the sky. Whether the six men saw one thing or several is not resolved here.
