Bright Objects over Syria (2023)

On the night of 31 March 2023 two US Air Force F-16s on patrol over north-eastern Syria reported possibly ten to twenty bright objects manoeuvring quickly from west to east above 60,000 feet. Each could be held on a targeting pod for about 20 seconds before it dimmed and vanished. This is the record of what the crews reported, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Bright Objects over Syria (2023) is a reported UAP case in North-east of Rumalyn Landing Zone, Hasakah Governorate, north-eastern Syria, 31 March 2023, from 2302Z.
  • Two F-16 crews over north-eastern Syria reported possibly ten to twenty bright objects manoeuvring quickly from west to east above 60,000 feet.
  • According to the mission report, each object could be held on a targeting pod for about 20 seconds before it dimmed and disappeared.
  • The crews compared the pod against a star and the report says the results were different.
  • The report notes that none of the objects flew in the formations seen on earlier sorties, which are not in the archive.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

From 2302Z on 31 March 2023 a pair of F-16CM fighters flying a defensive counter-air patrol north-east of the Rumalyn Landing Zone saw "several bright objects manuevering quickly west to east". The report puts them at FL600+, which is above 60,000 feet, and counts possibly ten to twenty. A crew could hold one on the targeting pod in TV mode for about 20 seconds "before object would become dim and disappear from targeting pod". They then turned the pod on a star for comparison. "Results were different," the analyst wrote. One more line hints at a history: "None of the objects were seen in any formations as previously seen in prior sorties."

What is on the record

The source is a US Air Force mission report, DOW-UAP-D20, filed by the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron during Operation Inherent Resolve. US Central Command declassified it on 8 October 2025 and the Department of War published it in its first PURSUE release on 8 May 2026. The release titles it "Iraq, 2023". The report itself says the two-ship flew from Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia and crossed Iraq before it "entered SY airspace". The Rumalyn Landing Zone was a US base in Syria's Hasakah Governorate, so the sighting belongs to Syria.

The objects' own position is masked. So are the callsigns, tail numbers and every name. The report records no radio-frequency signature and no effect on the crews, and no video is paired with it in the release. The earlier sorties it mentions are not in the archive.

The report offers no explanation beyond its star comparison. AARO's 2024 annual report says it increasingly resolves sightings to the Starlink satellite constellation. No released source applies that to this night.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observers are the crews of a 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron two-ship, named by unit with the individuals withheld. No independent testimony sits beside the report in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What crossed the sky north-east of Rumalyn is not resolved here.
