The Oliver's Castle Lights
1996 · Below Oliver's Castle, Roundway Down, near Devizes · Wiltshire · England
WHAT IT IS
Balls of light dart over a wheat field at dawn and a snowflake formation seems to swirl into being beneath them. The most famous 'crop circle forming' footage ever shown.
THE ALIEN READING
Brought to the Barge Inn by a young man calling himself 'John Wheyleigh'; some video labs called it clean, and it still appears as genuine in documentaries such as Contact (2001) and in r/UFOs threads.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
Investigator Peter Sørensen found the lights carried none of the motion blur dawn shutter speeds would give. A Nippon TV crew identified 'Wheyleigh' as John Wabe of a Bristol video-effects studio, and in 1999 Colin Andrews reported that Wabe had confessed on camera that he made it.
WHERE IT STANDS
Hoax / fake. Passed off as unexplained, then exposed or confessed.
