The Tully Saucer Nest
1966 · Horseshoe Lagoon, near Tully · Queensland · Australia
WHAT IT IS
A farmer saw a grey saucer rise out of a swamp lagoon and fly off, leaving a 'nest' of reeds swirled flat in a clockwise ring. The founding UFO nest.
THE ALIEN READING
George Pedley said he watched a grey-silver craft rise ten metres and speed away; more 'nests' were found nearby, and Tully became the template for reading flattened rings as landing marks.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
The local police, the RAAF and the University of Queensland leaned to a natural cause, a whirlwind or waterspout, though none was proved and Pedley's account was never refuted. Doug Bower later said reading about Tully in Australia gave him the idea for the circles he and Dave Chorley began making in England.
WHERE IT STANDS
Disputed. No maker has claimed it. Sceptics say people made it; proponents point to what they say people could not do.
