The Alton Barnes Pictogram
1990 · East Field, Alton Barnes · Wiltshire · England
WHAT IT IS
A chain of circles, rings, 'keys' and bars about 120 m long: the formation that turned crop circles into a summer spectacle, and later the art on a Led Zeppelin box set.
THE ALIEN READING
Cereologists hailed it as a new 'language' far beyond any weather effect. A farmhand reported a loud roar in the night, and it became the pilgrimage that made Alton Barnes the centre of the crop circle world.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
Nobody has claimed it, but it appeared in the summer researchers were fooled again and again: by Mike Jay's Etchilhampton formation and by the hoax circles planted under Operation Blackbird's cameras. A year later Doug Bower and Dave Chorley said they had made more than 200 circles.
WHERE IT STANDS
Disputed. No maker has claimed it. Sceptics say people made it; proponents point to what they say people could not do.
