The Mandelbrot Set
1991 · Ickleton, south of Cambridge · Cambridgeshire · England
WHAT IT IS
The first fractal in a field: a recognisable Mandelbrot set pressed into corn eleven miles from Cambridge.
THE ALIEN READING
A pilot told the Cambridge Weekly News: 'They are obviously not man-made — they are far too symmetrical for that.' It opened the era of mathematical formations that proponents read as signals from an intelligence.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
No maker has come forward. Later letters to the same paper explained the shape, and mathematician Susan Stepney notes that a university town on summer vacation 'seems to implicate graduate students' — a guess, not a claim.
WHERE IT STANDS
Disputed. No maker has claimed it. Sceptics say people made it; proponents point to what they say people could not do.
