WHAT IT IS

A lizard-headed figure shared as an ancient statue of a reptilian god. It stands on a modern promenade in Chiclayo.

THE ALIEN READING

Two posts on r/HighStrangeness, about 4,000 upvotes between them, called it a statue to 'an ancient reptilian god named Morrop'.

WHAT THE RECORD SAYS

It is a modern sculpture on the Paseo Yortuque, one of a set of figures from north-coast Peruvian mythology. Morrop, the iguana man, draws on lizard figures in Moche and Lambayeque art, but the statue is not ancient.

WHERE IT STANDS

Explained. Historians and archaeologists account for what it shows. The alien reading is a modern one.
