WHAT IT IS

A gargoyle on a twelfth-century abbey is a dead ringer for the creature from Alien. That is because it is the creature from Alien.

THE ALIEN READING

Shared online as an 850-year-old carving of a Xenomorph, as if the medieval masons had seen one.

WHAT THE RECORD SAYS

It is one of twelve replacement gargoyles made in 1991 when the eroded originals came down. A mason was, in the minister's words, 'having a bit of fun' with H. R. Giger's design.

WHERE IT STANDS

Explained. Historians and archaeologists account for what it shows. The alien reading is a modern one.
